The administration is on high alert following the death of four children who drowned in the Rapti River near Mirzapur on April 1st. Taking the incident seriously, prompt action is being taken to prevent such accidents from recurring.
The villagers are unable to forget the deaths of four children who drowned at the Rapti River ghat near Mirzapur village, located at Lahasari Bandha.
Akash, Keshav, and Vindresh from Mirzapur explained that every summer, the Mirzapur Ghat develops into a picnic spot. Large numbers of people come here to bathe, raising the risk of accidents. To find relief from the heat, young people from the city, as well as from Chauri Chaura, Sonbarsa, Chargawa, Sahajanwa, and Balapar areas, arrive here by bike and car.
The ghat remains crowded from morning until evening. From April to June, until the water level rises, there is a daily gathering. For the convenience of the people, temporary shops selling betel leaves, gutkha, tea, and water also open. Many young men jump off the pontoon bridge and bathe, making videos of themselves and sharing them on the internet, further increasing the risk.
Due to the inaccuracy of the actual depth of the river and the presence of ponds, there is a risk of accidents. Furthermore, drowning risks exist at other major ghats, including Rajghat, Domingarh, Sahajanwa, Pipganj, and Barhalganj. Therefore, awareness campaigns will be conducted to educate the public. People will also be made aware of the risks of bathing in rivers and ponds through internet media.
Gautam Gupta, an expert with the District Disaster Management Authority, said that vulnerable locations are being identified by surveying rivers and ponds throughout the district. Warning signs will be installed at these locations. Public awareness campaigns will be launched in rural areas to alert people.
