Om Puri started his film career with Kannada cinema. His first film was 'Kalla Kalla Bachitako', which was released in 1975. Om Puri won the National Film Award twice, Padma Shri Award and Lifetime Achievement Award for his acting skills. But his childhood was spent in extreme poverty.

Father was jailed for theft

According to reports, even though his father worked in the Indian Railways and the Indian Army, he had to make a living by washing utensils. In fact, when Om Puri was 6 years old, his father was jailed for stealing cement. After his father went to jail, Om Puri and his family became homeless. There was no one to run the household expenses. Then Om Puri took the responsibility on his shoulders and started washing utensils in a tea shop while his brother became a porter. Apart from this, he also used to pick up coal from the railway tracks.

Om Puri's childhood may have been spent in poverty, but the actor continued his studies. Om Puri was studying at FTII. He did not even have the money to pay the fees. It is said that he had to pay Rs 280 to FTII, but he never repaid this debt.

The actor's cinematic journey began in 1976 with the film Ghasiram Kotwal. It was an adaptation of a Marathi play. Apart from his acting career, Om Puri's personal life was also a matter of interest for people. He married Seema Kapoor in 1991, who was Annu Kapoor's sister. Unfortunately, this marriage lasted only eight months. After this, in 1993, Om Puri married journalist Nandita Puri, with whom he had a son named Ishaan.

In the year 2009, Nandita wrote a biography about Om Puri, titled Unlikely Hero: The Story of Om Puri. In this book, she wrote some things about Om Puri which should not be made public. After this, a controversy arose between the two.
