China has approved the project of the world's largest hydropower dam. This dam will be built in the eastern part of the Tibetan Plateau. This project is likely to affect millions of people in India and Bangladesh.
According to estimates provided by China Power Construction Corporation, the dam will be located on the lower reaches of China's Yarlung Zangbo River. It can generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year.
The biggest dam is still in China
Central China still has the world's largest dam, called the Three Gorges Dam. It currently produces 88.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This means that the dam to be built in Tibet will produce 3 times more electricity than it does now.
Best place for hydropower project
About 50 kilometers of the Yarlung Zangbo river falls from a height of 2000 meters. Obviously, while this will facilitate China's hydropower project on one hand, it will also pose new challenges to engineering.
It is believed that the cost of building this dam will be much less than the Three Gorges Dam. This will also include engineering costs. The cost of the Three Gorges Dam was about 254.2 billion yuan, which also included the cost of displacing 1.4 million people.
will have an impact on the environment
- However, the cost of the Three Gorges Dam was initially estimated at only 57 billion yuan.
- After completion of the project the cost was found to be 4 times more.
- Officials have not said how many people will be displaced by the Tibet project and what impact it will have on the ecosystem.
- It is being said that this hydropower project to be built in Tibet will produce one-third of China's electricity needs.
- At the same time, this will also have a serious impact on the environment and the flow of the river.
India and Bangladesh worried
This project of China has increased the concern of India and Bangladesh. Both the countries have expressed their objection to it. They believe that this project will change the environment as well as the flow of the river.
Let us tell you that when the Yarlung Zangbo river enters India after Tibet, it is called Brahmaputra. It passes through Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and goes to Bangladesh.
