A few hours after the announcement of the ceasefire agreement between the Israeli government and Hamas over the Gaza war, a deadlock has arisen over it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that a crisis arose regarding the agreement at the last moment. Meanwhile, 72 people have been killed and about 200 injured in Israel's latest air strikes in Gaza.

On Wednesday, after US President Joe Biden and the Qatar government announced a ceasefire in Gaza, Netanyahu had indicated that there were some objections to the agreement. It is known that the US and Qatar were mediating between the two sides for the agreement.

98 hostages held by Hamas to be released

Beyond Netanyahu's statement, the reality of the agreement is that the halt to the 15-month-long fighting has been welcomed by the Palestinian population of Gaza, relatives of Israeli hostages and world leaders. According to the agreement, 33 of the 98 hostages held by Hamas are to be released in six weeks.

Netanyahu's office has said that the Israeli government's cabinet has not yet met to approve the agreement. While senior Hamas leader Izzat al-Rishaq has said that he is committed to abide by the ceasefire announced by the mediators. It is known that on October 7, 2023, 1,200 people were killed in Hamas' attack on Israeli cities.

Fighters of Hamas and allied organizations had also kidnapped 250 people from Israel, out of which 98 people are still in the custody of Hamas. In response to this, Israel attacked Gaza on October 7, in which more than 46 thousand people have been killed so far and 90 percent of the people in the Gaza Strip with a population of 23 lakhs have become homeless.

PM Netanyahu is under heavy pressure in the country

There is a lot of pressure in the country on the Netanyahu government to release the hostages. For the last 15 months, their relatives and supporters have been running a movement for the release of the hostages. But during the temporary ceasefire in November 2023, questions were raised on the Netanyahu government's decision to release Palestinians convicted of murder in exchange for hostages from jail.

This time, the far-right parties in the government are questioning the format of the agreement to stop the war despite Hamas's effective presence in Gaza. They are not ready for a permanent ceasefire under any circumstances. If an agreement is reached under pressure from the Biden government, these right-wing parties can even topple the Netanyahu government in Israel.
