Kathmandu. Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda on Friday failed to win the trust vote in Parliament. With this, the way was cleared for the formation of a new coalition government under the leadership of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, leader of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML).Last week, the CPN-UML withdrew support from the Prachanda government and reached an agreement with the Nepali Congress to form a new government. Oli and Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba will take turns as Prime Minister for one and a half years each.
Oli staked claim to form government
After the fall of the Prachanda government on Friday, Oli presented his claim to form a new government with the support of 165 MPs before President Ramchandra Poudel. These MPs include 77 MPs from his party and 88 MPs from the Nepali Congress. This coalition government also has the support of some other small parties.Earlier, Nepali Communist Party (Maoist Center) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda got only 63 votes on the no-confidence motion in the 275-member parliament. At least 138 votes were needed to win the trust vote.
Prachanda has faced no-confidence motion four times so far
The vote against the motion was 194. Prachanda has faced four confidence votes so far since taking over as prime minister on December 25, 2022.Speaker of the House of Representatives Dev Raj Ghimire put Prachanda's vote of confidence to vote in accordance with Article 100 clause 2 of the Constitution. After the voting was completed, he announced that the vote of confidence put forward by Prime Minister Prachanda could not be passed.
