India is among the five countries of the world where the maximum number of people are living in extreme poverty. This information has been given in the latest report of the United Nations. According to the report, about 1.1 billion people in the world are living in extreme poverty and half of them are minors.
1.1 billion people in the world live in extreme poverty
The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was released on Thursday by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) of the University of Oxford. It says that 1.1 billion people in the world are living in extreme poverty, of which 40 percent are living in countries at war, fragile state or with little peace.
23.4 crore people are living in poverty in India
According to the report, 23.4 crore people are living in poverty in India, which is placed in the medium Human Development Index. India is among the five countries where the number of people living in extreme poverty is the highest.
These are the figures of four countries other than India
According to the report, apart from India, four other countries are Pakistan (93 million), Ethiopia (86 million), Nigeria (74 million) and Congo (66 million), which have been placed in the low Human Development Index. The report said that out of the 1.1 billion people living in extreme poverty in the world, nearly half (48.1 percent) live in these five countries.
India said in the United Nations- 25 crore people were lifted out of poverty
India reiterated its commitment to ensuring food security for its vast population through various initiatives at the UN, while highlighting that 225 crore people have been lifted out of poverty. India's First Secretary at the UN, Sneha Dubey, delivered India's statement at the General Debate of the Second Committee on Poverty Eradication and Agricultural Development, Food Security and Nutrition.
Dube attributed India's success to the government's targeted policy interventions that empower marginalized and vulnerable communities. In his statement, he highlighted that global poverty levels have been steadily increasing in recent years.
India's first secretary at the United Nations said this
He said 25 crore people in India have been lifted out of poverty and the Indian government has designed targeted policy interventions to empower the marginalised and vulnerable sections of society. The gender gap has started to reduce; skilling the youth is a key priority.
