Menopause is discussed a lot. With increasing age, not only women feel the changes in hormones but men also go through uncomfortable situations. When does this happen, do men also feel mood swings like women, what to do if there is a problem? Regarding all such questions, news agency IANS spoke to Dr. Sameer Khanna, Director of Urology Department at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi.
What is male menopause?
According to the senior urologist, andropause, which is often called "male menopause" by common people, is not the same as menopause in women. Although they do have some similarities. Andropause refers to a gradual decline in testosterone hormone levels with age in men, which usually begins around the age of 50 and increases gradually over the years. According to Dr Khanna, this does not affect fertility. He said, unlike menopause, which marks the clear end of fertility in women, this does not happen in andropause.
What are the symptoms?
Andropause includes symptoms such as fatigue, decreased libido, mood swings, loss of muscle mass, and increased fat. These changes are associated with falling testosterone levels, but they can also be triggered by factors such as stress, chronic illness, or lifestyle habits.
How dangerous is male menopause?
Is there a need to be afraid of it? On this question, the doctor said, "No, men should be aware of andropause but they should not necessarily "worry" about it. It is a natural process of aging, most people experience only mild symptoms. However, those who have more problems should consult an expert. Blood tests can determine testosterone levels, and if they are abnormally low, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may be an option. TRT should only be used under medical supervision, as it can cause cardiovascular problems and increase the risk of prostate problems."
How can we protect ourselves?
Doctors also recommend adopting a healthy lifestyle. He said, the effects of andropause can be prevented by regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, stress management and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol. Men should also prioritize regular health checkups to monitor overall health and address any emerging health concerns.
