North Korea failed to put its second spy satellite into orbit. A North Korean rocket carrying the spy satellite exploded in mid-air on Monday, North Korean state media reported. The satellite launch had been criticized by its neighbors.
The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency said the rocket exploded after an engine problem shortly after takeoff from the northwestern space centre. The North put its first military reconnaissance satellite into orbit in November last year as part of efforts to build a space-based surveillance network.
North Korea to launch three more satellites in 2024
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later said at a ruling party meeting that North Korea would launch three more military spy satellites in 2024. The United Nations has banned any satellite launches by North Korea, but North Korea says it is its right to launch satellites and test missiles.
