The interim government of Mohammad Yunus of Bangladesh is writing a new history of the country. The government there is rewriting important events related to the 1971 Liberation War.
From this year, it will be mentioned in Bangladesh's textbooks that the independence of Bangladesh was declared on 6 March 1971 not by Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman but by Ziaur Rahman. Not only this, Mujib's title of 'Father of the Nation' has also been removed from the new textbooks.
What will be written in the books?
Professor AKM Riazul Hasan, chairman of Bangladesh's National Curriculum and Textbook Board, told the newspaper Daily Star that new textbooks for the 2025 academic year will state that 'On March 26, 1971, Ziaur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh and on March 27 he made another declaration of independence on behalf of Bangabandhu.'
Who is Ziaur Rahman?
Ziaur Rahman was the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and husband of current BNP chief Khaleda Zia. If we look into history, the Bangladesh Liberation War led by Mujibur Rahman, father of Sheikh Hasina, who was recently removed from the post of Prime Minister, fought against the Pakistani army to liberate the country.
