Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been issued an ultimatum by a cabinet minister of his own government amidst the ongoing war in Gaza. Tensions seem to be increasing among Israeli leaders, the reason for which is the threat of resignation of Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz from the government.
Demand to wage war on Gaza
According to a CNN report, a new plan for war in Gaza may be adopted within three weeks. This is because former Israeli Defense Minister Gantz has warned PM Benjamin Netanyahu and demanded that the cabinet prepare a war plan against Hamas by June 8.
Threat of withdrawal from government
Gantz warned that if his demands were not met, he would withdraw from the government. He said the plan included dismantling Hamas, repatriating hostages, establishing an alternative government in the Gaza Strip, and bringing back Israeli settlers to the north.
Netanyahu should take a decisive decision: Gantz
Gantz said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must choose between "victory and statecraft." "If Netanyahu chooses to lead like this, the country will go into abyss," Gantz added. "We will step down from government, turn to the people and form a government that can deliver a real victory."
Gantz acknowledged that the war is having a harmful effect on civilians, but insisted that a "decisive decision" is needed. Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office has rejected Benny Gantz's threat to quit the government. He has said that the ultimatum he gave for a war plan against Hamas would harm Israel.
