Holika Dahan symbolizes the holy beginning of the festival of Holi. It is celebrated just a day before the festival of colors. This year Holika Dahan is being done on March 13, i.e. today. Holi Story (Holika Dahan 2025 Story Path)
According to the popular legend, a demon named Hiranyakashyap used to torture his own son Prahlad, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, every day in order to kill him. One day he decided to kill him on the full moon day of the month of Falgun . 8 days before this date, Hiranyakashyap gave a lot of troubles to his son Prahlad so that he would become a devotee of his father out of fear, but even after these tortures, there was no change in Prahlad's devotion towards Hari. Neither did he leave the path of devotion to Lord Vishnu (Lord Narasimha) .
Troubled by this, Hiranyakashyap sought help from his sister Holika, who had the boon that she would not burn in fire. To help her brother, Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad in her lap. Due to the blessings of Shri Hari, the fire could not burn Prahlad, but Holika was burnt to ashes in that fire. All these incidents happened in the same 8 days, which are known as Holashtak. That is why no auspicious work is done during this period.
