This is how Govardhan Puja started

According to the legend, Lord Krishna broke the pride of Indradev on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Lord Krishna, the savior of the world, lifted Govardhan mountain on his index finger to save the people of Braj from the wrath of Indra. After this, all the people of Braj came down the mountain with their animals, which saved them from the wrath of Indradev. After this, the people of Braj worshiped Lord Krishna and offered bhog. Since then, the festival of Govardhan Puja (Govardhan Puja Significance) is celebrated every year on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month.
