According to Ganesha Purana , the Mouse King was earlier a Gandharva named Krauncha. Once he insulted Sage Vamadeva, due to which the Sage cursed him to become a mouse. After becoming a mouse, Krauncha started creating havoc in Sage Parashara's ashram. He destroyed everything in the ashram, causing great distress to the Sage and other residents. Sage Parashara sought help from Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha decided to teach Krauncha a lesson. He threw his noose and caught Krauncha.
After this, Krauncha apologized to Lord Ganesha for his mistake. Lord Ganesha forgave him, but he asked him to become his vehicle. After this, he accepted the proposal of Lord Ganesha and became his vehicle. Since then, Mushak Raj always stays with Lord Ganesha.
