News Topical, Digital Desk : Chaturmas is the period when Lord Vishnu goes into a sleep in the Kshirsagar for four months. He then awakens on the Ekadashi of Kartik month. During this period, any auspicious or auspicious work is prohibited. It is believed that any donation, fasting, chanting, or homa performed during this period brings countless merits.

Starting from this day

Chaturmas begins on Devshayani Ekadashi, which falls during the bright fortnight of the month of Ashadha, and ends on Devuthani Ekadashi in the month of Kartik. Therefore, in 2026 , Chaturmas will begin on July 25th and continue until September 30th.

Importance of Chaturmas

Chaturmas comprises the months of Ashadha, Shravan, Bhadrapada, and Ashwin. Chaturmas is not only a time for self-control but also for accumulating virtue. It is believed that the rewards of good deeds performed during Chaturmas are many times greater than those performed in other months.

These tasks yield benefits

  • The most important thing during Chaturmas is to follow the "niyaam." Even if you take on a small vow, like lighting a lamp every day, stick to it with unwavering devotion for the entire four months.
  • During Chaturmas, one should worship Lord Vishnu and chant the mantra Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, which brings peace of mind and freedom from suffering.
  • Regular recitation of Ramayana, Srimad Bhagavad Geeta or Vishnu Purana during Chaturmas opens the doors to spiritual progress.
  • According to scriptures, 33 crore gods and goddesses reside in cows. Therefore, visiting a cowshed during Chaturmas and serving cows, feeding them green fodder or jaggery, helps to cleanse your accumulated sins and radiate positive energy.
  • During these four months, one should resolve to remain silent, speak less, and eat only sattvic food. This improves both physical and mental health.

This donation will eradicate poverty.

  • During Chaturmas, you should feed the poor, Brahmins and saints as per your capacity and donate money.
  • Since this time is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, donating yellow clothes in this month is considered extremely auspicious.
  • You can donate jaggery and gram dal during this period, which will help in getting rid of financial problems.
