Diwali (Deepawali 2024) is the most important festival of Hindus. It starts from Dhanteras and continues on Bhai Dooj. As the name of this festival suggests, Diwali is a festival of lights. On this day people light lamps in their homes as well as in the streets. On Diwali, one lamp is lit with ghee and all others with oil. Let's know the reason for this
This is how lighting of diyas started
According to mythological belief, it was on the day of Diwali that Lord Shri Ram reached his city Ayodhya after killing Ravana and completing 14 years of exile. Since it was Amavasya on this day, the people of the city welcomed Lord Shri Ram by lighting lamps. When he returned to Ayodhya after conquering Lanka, the people of Ayodhya welcomed Lord Ram by lighting a garland of lamps. Since then the tradition of celebrating this day as Deepotsav started.
Importance of lighting lamps on Diwali
Lighting earthen lamps on the day of Diwali is considered very auspicious. There is a religious belief that doing so brings Goddess Lakshmi to the house, which creates an atmosphere of happiness and prosperity in the home and family. It is said that Goddess Lakshmi arrives on earth on the day of Diwali. In this way, Goddess Lakshmi is welcomed by lighting lamps so that she can enter the house.
That is why a ghee lamp is lit
According to the beliefs of astrology, if mustard oil is put in an earthen lamp and lit on the day of Diwali, then the planet Saturn becomes stronger. Due to which all kinds of troubles are removed and happiness and peace prevails in the house. At the same time, lighting a lamp of cow ghee is considered auspicious to receive the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. Therefore, it is customary to light the first lamp on the night of Diwali for Goddess Lakshmi.
