'I hope for closer relations between the two countries'

In response, Modi said in a post on X, "Lai Ching-te, thank you for your warm message. I look forward to even closer ties with Taiwan, working towards mutually beneficial economic and technological partnership."

China lodged a protest with India on this

Reacting to these messages, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that China has lodged a protest with India over this. When Mao was asked for his comment in a press conference, he said, 'First of all, there is no president in the Taiwan region.' He also said, 'China opposes all kinds of official talks between Taiwan officials and countries that have diplomatic relations with China. There is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inseparable part of the Republic of China.'

India made serious political commitments

Mao said, "The One China principle is a universally recognized norm in international relations and there is a consensus on it in the international community. India has made serious political commitments on it and it should recognize, be alert and oppose the political moves of the Taiwan authorities."
