According to mythology, when Maa Sati committed suicide by jumping into the fire of Yagya, Lord Shiva picked up her body and started roaming around the world. Then to calm Shiva, Lord Vishnu cut her body into many pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra, due to which the body parts of Sati fell at many places. Wherever these body parts fell, there are 51 Shakti Peeths established today. According to some beliefs, the number of these Shakti Peeths is also said to be 52.  

 

Where is the temple located

Kalighat Kali Temple is located on the banks of Adiganga Canal in Kolkata. According to mythological beliefs, the right toe of Sati Ji fell at this place, due to which it is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths. This temple was built in 1809 by the Sabarna Roy Choudhary family. 

 

Specialty of the temple

Kalighat Kali Temple is mainly dedicated to Goddess Kali, who is one of the 10 Mahavidyas. The idol of the Goddess installed in this temple is unique and different in itself. In the idol of Goddess Kali's fierce form, she is seen keeping her foot on Lord Shiva's chest. In this idol, the tongue of Maa Kali is made of gold.

 

Along with this, this ancient temple is also known for its unique architecture. Kalighat Kali Temple also has a museum which houses various artifacts related to the history and mythology of Goddess Kali.

 

There is a huge crowd during Navratri

During Navratri, Kalighat temple is decorated with lights and flowers, the grandeur of which is a sight to behold. It is believed that the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled by just visiting the temple and the spoiled work of the devotees also gets done. Along with Navratri, during Durga Puja, from Shashthi to Dashami, a crowd of devotees throngs the temple.
