Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma was summoned for questioning on Tuesday following protests outside the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala against the arrest of Hindu leader Chinmoy Das. Seven people were arrested in the case. They were accused of breaking into the Bangladesh Consulate and causing property damage.

 

The Indian envoy entered the Foreign Ministry at 4 pm, state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) said. The Indian High Commissioner was summoned by Acting Foreign Secretary Riaz Hamidullah.

 

Why did tension increase again between India and Bangladesh?

Let us tell you that tensions between the two neighboring countries have increased since the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited India on August 5. This tension has increased further after the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmay Krishna Das last week.

 

 

Consular services suspended until further notice

All consular services at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala will remain suspended till further orders due to security reasons, an official said here on Tuesday. The announcement came a day after a group of people protesting the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in the neighbouring country barged into the premises of the Bangladesh mission.

 

 

Visa and consular services suspended

Md Al-Amin, First Secretary of the Bangladesh Mission, said that in view of the security situation, all visa and consular services at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala will remain suspended until further notice. This will come into effect immediately.

 

Three police officers were also suspended

An unruly mob broke security barricades and damaged property at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala on Monday. Hours after removing the Bangladeshi national flag, Tripura police arrested seven people and suspended three police officers for the incident.

 

 

Patrolling continues 24 hours a day

Additional security personnel have been deployed near the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission premises and mobile patrolling is being carried out round the clock to prevent further incidents. The three police personnel against whom departmental proceedings have been initiated for negligence in duty have been identified as sub-inspectors Dilu Jamatia and Joynal Hossain and Sergeant Debabrata Sinha. A DSP-level officer under the SP (Security) office has also been removed from duty.

 

India expressed strong protest

India on Monday expressed regret over the vandalism at the premises of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Agartala, the capital of Tripura bordering Bangladesh. The Foreign Ministry said consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances and the government is increasing security at Bangladeshi missions in India following the incident.
