According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is one of the most common cancers. Every year about 2 million new cases of this disease are reported. Lack of knowledge about this cancer and late detection are the main reasons for deaths due to it. Therefore, to make people aware about this deadly disease and to support breast cancer patients, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated every year in the month of October.

Breast cancer is a major type of cancer that occurs in women. However, men can also suffer from breast cancer , but this is very rare. Breast cancer can be treated if detected on time. Therefore, it is very important to check your breasts regularly and also pay attention to its symptoms (Breast Cancer Symptoms).

 

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

Some of its common symptoms are-

  • Feeling a lump in the breast or under the armpit
  • change in breast shape or size
  • leakage from the inside of the nipple
  • Inwardness or hardening of the nipple
  • Redness or rashes on the breast skin
  • Swelling under or under the breast
  • one breast looking different than the other

If any of these symptoms appear, it is important to contact a doctor.

How to do breast self-examination at home?

  • The best time to examine your breasts is in the week after your period, when your breasts are less tender. You can examine yourself standing up or lying down.
  • To examine yourself while standing, raise your arms and contract your chest muscles. Then, gently press your breasts with your fingers and feel your breasts for any lumps or abnormalities.
  • Repeat the same process with your hands raised at your sides.
  • To examine yourself while lying down, place your hand under your head and feel your breast with your opposite hand. Gently press your breast with your fingers. Feel slowly from the outside to the nipple. Feel your breasts for any lumps or abnormalities.
  • Look at your nipples and see if any of them are leaking. Especially if there is any blood.
  • Examine the skin of your breasts for any redness or rashes. Also, check if the skin is hard or not.
