A tragic incident has come to light from the Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha. A temple servant died of a heart attack. The name of the deceased servant was Jagannath Mekap, who was a resident of Matimandap Sahi area of Puri and was working as a Suar Badu servant in the temple.
Fell while sprinkling water in the sanctum sanctorum
According to the information, Jagannath Mekap suddenly collapsed while sprinkling water in the sanctum sanctorum during the Dwipahar Dhoop Anushthan of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. He complained of chest pain, after which other servitors and temple staff immediately took him to the district headquarters hospital in the temple ambulance. However, on reaching the hospital, doctors declared him dead.

Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain, SP Vineet Agarwal and other senior officials including the temple's policy administrator reached the hospital and consoled the family of the deceased devotee. The collector told the media that Jagannath Mekap was treated at Jagannath Hospital two years ago due to heart disease. However, he recovered and again started serving Mahaprabhu.
Request to appoint son in service
The collector further said, "This is a very sad incident that happened during the service. We are with the family of the deceased and will provide all possible help." Jagannath Mekap's family has requested to appoint their son in the service. This incident has caused an atmosphere of mourning among the sevaks working in the temple and the devotees.
