What is fried rice syndrome?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, fried rice syndrome is a food poisoning caused by a bacteria called Bacillus cereus (B. cereus). This microscopic bacteria prefers to live on starch-rich food items like rice and pasta, but it can affect almost any food. This bacteria needs a combination of time and the right temperature to thrive.

Symptoms of Fried Rice Syndrome

Like other types of food poisoning, symptoms of fried rice syndrome may include:-

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • vomit
  • nausea
  • Abdominal pain and cramps

Prevention of Fried Rice Syndrome

  • To prevent fried rice syndrome, you must keep the following points in mind-
  • Keep raw rice and pasta in a cool, dry place until you're using it for cooking.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before preparing, eating or handling food.
  • Use boiling water or a rice cooker to cook rice or pasta thoroughly.
  • Do not leave any cooked food outside for more than two hours. Put the leftover food in a container and put it in the fridge immediately.
  • Reheat leftovers to 165 F (73.8 C) and reheat food only once.
  • If it's been more than two days since you cooked the food, throw it away, even if you've stored it properly in the fridge.
