New Delhi: The central government has succeeded in removing the reason for the declining enrollment ratio of girl students in higher classes. Now more than 97.5 percent of the schools in the country have separate toilet facilities for girl students.

The central government submitted its affidavit to the Supreme Court

The Central Government has stated in its affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court that separate toilet facilities for girl students have been provided in more than 97.5 percent of schools in the country, including government, government aided and private schools.

Instructions to prepare a national model for toilet construction

It is worth noting that one of the major reasons for girl students dropping out of higher classes was the lack of separate toilet facilities for them. The Centre has filed this affidavit following the direction of the apex court. While hearing a PIL, the Supreme Court had directed the Centre to prepare a national model for construction of toilets in accordance with the number of girl students in all government aided and residential schools across the country.

Free sanitary pads to girl students of class 6 to 12

The PIL has sought directions to the Centre and states to provide free sanitary pads to girl students of classes six to 12 and ensure separate toilet facilities for women in all government, government-aided and residential schools.

Delhi, Goa, Puducherry have achieved 100 percent target

The Centre has told the apex court that states and union territories like Delhi, Goa and Puducherry have achieved 100 per cent target. 98.8 per cent of schools in Uttar Pradesh have separate toilets for girl students. The central government also informed that 16 lakh toilets for boys and 17.5 lakh toilets for girl students have been constructed in more than 10 lakh government schools.

2.5 lakh toilets for male students and 2.9 lakh toilets for female students have been constructed in government-aided schools. On July 8, the Centre informed the apex court that it was in the final stages of framing a national policy on providing sanitary pads to school-going adolescent girls.
