News Topical, Digital Desk : World Heart Day is celebrated every year on September 29th. Its purpose is to raise awareness about heart-related diseases, which have become a major cause of death worldwide.
How common is heart failure?
According to statistics, one in three people will develop heart failure after the age of 55. Many factors contribute to this, such as obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, or anemia, but high blood pressure is considered the most responsible.
High blood pressure is the root cause of heart failure in approximately 39% of men and 59% of women. Furthermore, high blood pressure is found in approximately 90% of patients before heart failure.
How much difference does blood pressure make?
A person's blood pressure is higher than 160/90 mmHg, and their lifetime risk of heart failure doubles, while those with blood pressures lower than 140/90 mmHg have a significantly lower risk.
Nighttime blood pressure (BP) is particularly important. Research has found that people whose blood pressure is higher at night or whose normal day-night pattern is disrupted (such as a "non-dipper" or "riser" pattern) have an increased risk of heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.
Why is it important to control time?
The good news is that if blood pressure is properly controlled, many heart-related diseases, including heart failure, can be prevented. According to doctors, a combination of two medications is best initially for most hypertension patients. Additionally, some newer diabetes medications are proving helpful in controlling blood pressure and improving heart failure.
Easy ways to control blood pressure
- Along with medicines, lifestyle changes are also very important.
- Control your weight: Obesity is a major cause of both blood pressure and heart failure.
- Adopt a healthy diet: Give priority to fruits, vegetables, pulses, fish and poultry products.
- Reduce salt intake: Do not consume more than 5 grams of salt in a day.
- Increase physical activity: Do brisk walking or other moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes every day.
