
News Topical,Digital Desk : Gujarat Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants: Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay said on Monday (28 April) that 450 Bangladeshi citizens living in India without any documents have been identified. Along with this, he said that 6500 people have been detained on suspicion of being Bangladeshi citizens.
DGP Sahai said, "After a massive search operation in Ahmedabad and Surat, similar operations were conducted across the state in which about 6,500 suspected illegal Bangladeshi migrants were detained and their identities are being verified."

He said, "After a massive search operation was conducted in Ahmedabad and Surat, all the districts and police commissionerates of Gujarat were asked to do so (identify Bangladeshi citizens). According to the information available with me, we have detained and questioned about 6,500 suspected Bangladeshi citizens."
Sahay said, "So far, about 450 Bangladeshi citizens have been confirmed to be living here (in Gujarat) illegally. Interrogation of the rest of the detained people is going on. We believe that we will be successful in establishing the identity of a large number of illegal Bangladeshis."
Search operation in Ahmedabad and Surat
He said that after their identity is established as Bangladeshi citizens, steps will be taken for their deportation in coordination with various departments of the central government and the Border Security Force (BSF). According to the police, more than 1,000 suspected Bangladeshis detained after search operations in Ahmedabad and Surat are being questioned. Sahai said that documentary and technical evidence is being collected to establish their national identity before taking steps for their deportation.
The Gujarat government on Saturday claimed that it launched its "biggest ever operation" against illegal Bangladeshi residents in the state and detained 890 and 134 "illegal" migrants from Bangladesh in Ahmedabad and Surat respectively in just one night. Following the operation, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi held a video conference with senior police officials and directed them to "intensify the operation and thoroughly check all activities of Bangladeshis and take strict action wherever necessary", the government said in a statement.
