News Topical, Digital Desk : Do you know how many people around you are struggling with obesity? A recent survey has revealed very worrying figures. According to a survey conducted by LocalCircles, 76% of Indians admitted that one or more people in their close network (such as family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors) are obese. This survey not only highlights the alarming situation of obesity but also warns about the diseases associated with it.

What do the figures say?

The survey asked people how many people in their close network were obese. The figures were as follows:

  • 12% said they had "10 or more" people in their network who were overweight.
  • According to 10% of people this number is between "7 to 9".
  • 20% said they knew "4 to 6" such people.
  • 34% reported that "1 to 3" people in their network are obese.
  • Only 22% said that “no one in their network is obese ”.

The connection between obesity and serious illnesses

This problem isn't limited to weight gain. The survey revealed that 56% of people have overweight individuals in their networks who also suffer from other lifestyle-related diseases. When asked if overweight individuals in their networks also suffer from conditions like diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol, or fatty liver, the responses were as follows:

  • 19% said, "Yes, they all have one or more of these health issues."
  • 37% said, "Yes, most of them have these problems."
  • 37% said that some people do not have these diseases, they are just obese.

Diet and sedentary lifestyle

Those surveyed attributed their obesity to several reasons:

  • Ultra-processed foods: Highest among respondents at 68%
  • Sedentary lifestyle: 64% of people agreed that a sedentary lifestyle is a major cause of this.
  • Lack of exercise: 64% blamed lack of exercise
  • Medical condition: 27% linked it to an underlying medical condition

Survey from Tier 1 cities to villages

The survey was conducted through the LocalCircles platform, receiving over 50,000 responses from 319 districts across India.

  • The survey included 61% men and 39% women.
  • This included 47% from Tier 1 cities, 26% from Tier 2 cities, and 27% from Tier 3, 4 and rural districts.

This survey clearly shows that obesity is no longer just an individual problem but has become a matter of social concern.
