This year, 21 cases of congenital syphilis have been reported in counties outside the state. It is being said that its cases have increased in the last three years. This is a disease that can be prevented by giving timely treatment.

If not treated, it can lead to death. Ever since people have heard about this disease, everyone wants to know about it. Our article today is also on this topic. We will tell you what this disease is, and will also give detailed information about its symptoms and causes. Let's know-

What is this disease?

When a pregnant  woman is infected with syphilis and the infection reaches the baby in the womb or at the time of delivery, it is called congenital syphilis. The good news is that syphilis can be treated with antibiotics, and the baby can also be saved by getting treatment during pregnancy. If not treated, this infection can cause miscarriage. Also, the baby can be born dead. In some cases, the baby survives, but his health is not good.

How many types of this disease are there?

Early Congenital Syphilis: Its symptoms appear soon after birth and before the age of 2 years.

Late Congenital Syphilis: Its symptoms appear after the age of two years.

Early symptoms (from birth to 2 years)

  • Bone problems
  • Enlargement of the liver and spleen
  • Jaundice
  • Anaemia
  • Red rash on the skin
  • Persistent watery or bleeding nose
  • Wart-like lump
  • Rash on neck, mouth and arms and legs

Symptoms visible after two years

  • abnormal bone growth
  • Eye disease (inflammation of the cornea)
  • Decreased hearing
  • Gaps or clefts in the teeth (Hutchinson's teeth)

What are the reasons?

This disease is caused by a bacteria called Treponema pallidum. This bacteria reaches the baby's blood directly through the umbilical cord, i.e. placenta, and spreads throughout the body, damaging the organs and bones. In some cases, infection can also occur during delivery, but this is rare.
