News Topical, Digital Desk : At least 33 bills in non-NDA-ruled states are still pending approval by the governor or the president. This number is significant in light of the Supreme Court's opinion on the related presidential reference.

Of the 33 bills awaiting the Governor's or President's assent, 19 are from Bengal, 10 from Karnataka, three from Telangana and one from Kerala.

What did the Assembly Speaker say?

Reacting to the Supreme Court's decision, Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee on Thursday said that when a bill remains stuck without any clarification, its importance diminishes.

He said, "A bill is introduced for the benefit of the people. The government introduces it, it is debated, and dissent is expressed. After it is passed, it goes to the Governor. He can approve it, refuse it, or return it with a recommendation. If it is returned and then passed, he must approve it."

10 bills pending in Karnataka

The Karnataka Assembly has passed 10 bills pending, including one providing four percent reservation for Muslims in civil contracts. These bills are pending with the President, not the Governor.

Reservation bill pending in Telangana

A bill related to reservation for backward classes in Telangana is pending with the governor. Another proposal pending before the governor is to nominate former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin as an MLC under the governor's quota in August.

Azharuddin was recently sworn in as a minister, pending approval. The bill passed by the Kerala Assembly addresses the appointment of vice-chancellors, teaching staff, and separate chancellors for various universities in the state.
