News Topical, Digital Desk : At least 107 people have died after a whaleboat caught fire in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo on the Congo River, according to Reuters. The accident comes just days after at least 86 people died when a separate boat capsized at the confluence of the Nsolo and Great Maringa rivers in the Basankusu region.

The Ministry of Social Affairs said in the memo that a narrow, double-headed open boat caught fire in the Congo River near the village of Malange in the Lukolela region on Thursday (September 11, 2025) evening, leaving 146 people missing.

The note said rescuers found 209 survivors, many of whom were injured. The fire also destroyed the cargo on the ship and burned down 15 houses on the riverbank.
