New Delhi. The operations of many big companies around the world were badly affected due to the server outage of American tech giant Microsoft. Many airlines in many countries are facing problems in operating. The functioning of stock exchanges and banks was disrupted. In India too, the operations of airlines like Indigo and Akasa Airlines have been affected. But, the operations of the stock market and banks are still going on smoothly.
NSE said, we are not affected
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) says that it has not been affected by the technical glitch in Microsoft's system, which has affected the stock markets of many countries of the world. NSE says that trading on its platform continues smoothly.
However, the brokerage platform is facing problems. Services of some other brokerage houses including Nuvama, 5Paisa and IIFL Securities have been affected by the Microsoft outage. Investors are not able to place deals for buying and selling.
Banks in many countries including the US and the UK have also been affected by the Microsoft outage. But India's largest bank - State Bank of India (SBI) is completely untouched by this problem. On being asked about the global outage, SBI Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara said, 'Our system is completely fine and we are not facing any kind of problem.'
Banking RBI also said that the Microsoft outage did not have any effect on the country's financial and payment system. However, 10 banks and NBFCs were affected to some extent by the global outage. But, their problem was resolved soon.
What went wrong with Microsoft?
Microsoft is one of the world's largest software companies. Its computer operating system - Windows is used by common people as well as in the offices of the world's biggest companies. But, on Friday, computers and laptops with Windows operating system suddenly started restarting and shutting down.
This caused problems for users around the world. Some users are seeing blue screens on their laptops. Dell Technologies says that this problem is caused by the recent CrowdStrike update. CrowdSrike is a cybersecurity platform. It provides security solutions to users.
The wider impact of the problem
The technical glitch in Microsoft's server has affected the operations of airlines, TV telecast, banking and many corporate companies across the world. There is a problem in check-in and ticket booking at airports across the world, including India. Many flights are either getting delayed or getting cancelled.
When will the services be restored?
Microsoft says that it is aware of the problem and is working on solving it on a war footing. Microsoft has engaged several teams to find a solution to the problem. The good thing is that the company has found out the cause of the problem and has also restored some services. Users of Microsoft's Azure Cloud and Microsoft 365 services are most troubled due to CrowdStrike's update.
