News Topical, Digital Desk : Veteran theatre artist and filmmaker Yashwant Sardeshpande died of a heart attack on Monday morning. Sardeshpande had arrived in Bengaluru on Monday morning after performing a play in Dharwad on Sunday evening. Upon arrival, he complained of chest pain and fainted.

Admitted to hospital after chest pain

After complaining of chest pain, he was taken to Fortis Hospital where doctors attempted emergency treatment but he was declared dead in the morning. Union Minister Prahlad Joshi expressed his condolences on social media, writing, "We are deeply saddened to learn that our Hubli resident Yashwant Sardeshpande has passed away. He was a renowned Kannada stage actor and a highly popular playwright, who acted in and directed many plays across the state. His play All the Best was a huge success. He also acted in television and films."           

Studied at New York University

Born in Ukkali village in the Basavana Bagevadi taluk of Bijapur district, Sardeshpande earned a diploma in theater arts from the Ninasam Theatre Institute in Heggodu. He later earned a certificate course in cinema and drama writing from New York University in 1996. Sardeshpande has been widely praised for his contributions to Kannada theater.

In addition to All the Best, his best-known works include the comedy films Rashichakra, Olave Jeevan Sakshaktakara, Ninanadre Naaninena, Sahi Ri Sahi, Onda Bhatraddu, Andhayugan, Sahebaru Baruttare, Miss Point, Dil Maange More, and Hingadre Dot. He directed over 60 dramas, many of which had over 500 performances. He also acted in films such as Marma, Amruthadhare, and Rama Shama Bhama.

He has been honoured with several awards during his career, including the Rajyotsava Award in 2010, the Aryabhatta Award (2003), the Peacock Award (2005), the Sunfeast-Uday Award for Best Dialogue for Rama Shama Bhama (2006), the Abhinaya Bharati Award (2008), the Rangadhruv Award (2008), and the Globalman International Award (2008).
