Islamabad: The Pakistan government has removed its special representative in Afghanistan Asif Durrani. The Pakistan government has taken this step after tensions between Kabul and Islamabad increased. According to a government notification, Asif was relieved of the responsibilities of the post of special representative in Afghanistan on September 10.

The Express Tribune newspaper quoted sources as saying that Asif, appointed as the special representative in May 2023, failed to make an impact in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations. Asif did not have acceptance in Kabul due to having little contact with the Taliban-led interim government.

The post of special envoy was created in June 2020

According to the Dawn newspaper, the Pakistani army was unhappy with Asif's performance. The post of special envoy for Afghanistan was created in June 2020 after the US-Taliban Doha agreement. Pakistan-Afghanistan relations have been strained due to frequent attacks by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as well as border clashes.

Terrorist incidents have increased in Pakistan after the Taliban took power in 2021. The Pakistani government alleges that the TTP has a safe haven in Afghanistan and operates from there. The Taliban has been denying this allegation.
