Dhaka: The interim government of Bangladesh is making efforts to bring back former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Senior lawyer of the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal Mohammad Tajul Islam said on Sunday that the government will take necessary steps to extradite former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Her government will be tried for the charges of mass killings during the student-led mass movement.

Strict action against Hasina

Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India following the protests on August 5. International Crimes Tribunal chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam was quoted by The Daily Star newspaper as saying that necessary steps would be taken to bring back former prime minister Hasina under the extradition treaty with India to face trial for charges of mass killings during student-led protests in July and August.

Arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina

Speaking at a press conference held at the ICT campus in Dhaka, he said that when the International Crimes Tribunal resumes its work, we will file an application with the International Crimes Tribunal to issue arrest warrants against all absconding accused, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the cases registered for mass murder and crimes against humanity.

Very challenging and huge task

Mohammad Tajul Islam said that a decision will be taken after consultation with the government about amending the existing International Crimes Tribunal Act to hear new cases registered with IT. Information, documents and evidence against the accused will have to be collected from across the country and compiled and examined. They will have to be placed before the tribunal in a proper manner, which is a very challenging and huge task.

Bangladesh removes limit on cash withdrawal from banks

Bangladesh's central bank has lifted the limit on cash withdrawals from banks from Sunday. According to news agency Xinhua, Bangladesh Bank spokesman Mohammad Mazbul Haque announced on Saturday that the restriction on cash withdrawals will no longer be in place from Sunday.

He said bank account holders can now withdraw any amount from their accounts without any limit. The restriction had been in place for several weeks as the situation was volatile following a student-led mass movement that forced Sheikh Hasina to resign as prime minister on August 5. On August 7, the central bank asked banks to limit cash withdrawals to 100,000 taka per account per day. Last week, cash withdrawals were restricted to 500,000 taka per account per day.
