World Liver Day is celebrated every year on 19 April. The purpose of celebrating it is to make people aware about liver diseases. This day also encourages people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. This year the theme of World Liver Day 2025 is 'Food is Medicine'. Liver is an important part of our body. It is very important to take care of it to stay healthy.
Dr. Ajitabh Srivastava (Director- HPB Surgery and Liver Transplant, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj) said that the liver which works all the time cleans the blood, helps in digestion and stores essential nutrients for the body. The sad thing is that liver diseases often progress slowly without any symptoms. By the time we come to know, the damage has already been done. The doctor also gave information about some important liver tests so that the danger can be identified in time.
Liver function tests (LFTs)
This is the most common test that measures several things.
- ALT and AST: Elevated levels of these indicate inflammation or damage to the liver.
- Bilirubin: When its level increases, yellowness appears on the skin.
- Albumin: If this protein is being produced less then understand that your liver is not functioning properly.
Prothrombin Time (PT)
This test measures the speed at which blood clots form. If clots take too long to form, the liver may not be able to make clotting proteins, which could be a sign of a serious disease like cirrhosis.
GGT Test
This test is helpful in detecting bile duct problems and damage caused by alcohol . It is often done along with the ALP test to get accurate results.
Ammonia Test
If the level of ammonia in the blood is too high, then the patient may face problems like confusion, dizziness or trembling of hands and feet. This can also damage your liver.
Liver Ultrasound
It shows the picture of the liver without radiation, so that fatty liver, tumor or any type of wound can be identified. Let us tell you that only caution can keep you healthy.
They should get the test done
- For those who drink alcohol in excessive quantities, it is very important to get this test done.
- Even if you are suffering from diabetes or obesity, you should definitely get this test done.
- Even if you are taking any medicine for a long time, you will have to be careful.
- Those who frequently complain of fatigue, nausea or stomach ache should also get the test done.
Why is it necessary?
If liver disease is caught in time, then its treatment is possible. You can make your liver healthy by changing your lifestyle and with the right treatment.
