News Topical, Digital Desk : In Hinduism, the Sakat Chauth fast is observed on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the month of Magh. It is also known as Sankashti Chaturthi, Tilkut Chauth, or Maghi Chauth. This fast is especially observed by mothers for the long life, good health, and happiness and prosperity of their children. Let us learn why this festival is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and the mythological story behind it.

Why is this Sakat dedicated to Lord Ganesha?

According to scriptures, on this Chaturthi of the month of Magh, Lord Ganesha averted the biggest crisis of his life and proved his wisdom. On this day, by circumambulating his parents (Shiva and Parvati), he proved that the entire universe resides at the feet of parents. Lord Ganesha is known as "Vighnaharta," meaning the remover of sorrows. It is believed that fasting on this day pleases Lord Ganesha and removes all troubles (sakat) facing children, hence the name “Sakat Chauth.”

The end of the crisis faced by Lord Ganesha himself

According to mythology, it was on this day that a major crisis in Lord Ganesha's life was resolved. Goddess Parvati created him from her own paste, and after his battle with Lord Shiva, he was given new life by attaching an elephant's head. This day also celebrates his rebirth and the establishment of his auspicious form.

When is Sakat Chauth fast in 2026?

According to the Vedic calendar, the Chaturthi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Magha begins at 8:01 am on January 6th. This Tithi will end at 6:52 am on January 7th. Therefore, the Sakat Chauth fast will be observed on January 6th, 2026.

Importance and tradition of fasting

On this day, women observe a fast without water throughout the day and break it only after offering prayers to the moon in the evening. During the puja, sesame and jaggery laddus (tilkut) are offered to Lord Ganesha.

Importance of sesame seeds in worship

On this day, Ganesha is offered Tilkut (sesame seeds and jaggery). Donating and consuming sesame seeds during the month of Magha is considered beneficial for health and spiritual well-being, and is very dear to Lord Ganesha.
