News Topical, Digital Desk : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he will discuss important issues including the Global South when he meets world leaders at the G-7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada. The Prime Minister, who is on a four-day three-nation tour, arrived here on Monday evening local time and this is his first visit to Canada in a decade.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited him for the summit. This is PM Modi's sixth consecutive participation in the G-7 summit. He arrived in Canada from Cyprus and will travel to Croatia from here.

Prime Minister Modi said in a post on X on Monday evening, "I have reached Calgary, Canada to attend the G-7 Summit. I will meet various leaders at the summit and share my views on important global issues. I will also emphasize on the priorities of the Global South."

What is the 'Global South'?

Actually, the term 'Global South' is used to refer to economically less developed countries or developing countries. These countries are mainly present in Asia, Africa and Latin America. This term was first used during the Cold War.

The Global South countries mainly face economic and social challenges such as rising poverty levels, population growth, low income, lack of living space, limited educational opportunities, lack of adequate health systems.

On May 7, India carried out Operation Sindoor

Apart from the conference, the Prime Minister will also hold several bilateral meetings. This conference is being held a month after India's Operation Sindoor. In response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, India had carried out air strikes on May 7 under Operation Sindoor targeting terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In a post on X, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Canada for the G-7 Summit at the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney. He will participate in G-7 discussions on the future of energy security as well as diversification, technology, infrastructure and investment to ensure access and affordability in a changing world. The Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit."

It is noteworthy that Carney's invitation to PM Modi for the G-7 summit is being seen as a sign of improving relations between India and Canada. Relations between India and Canada started deteriorating in September 2023 when the then PM Justin Trudeau accused India of having a hand in the murder of pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India had strongly rejected this. The diplomatic tension between the two countries had increased to such an extent over this matter that many diplomats of each other were expelled.
