News Topical, Digital Desk : In Hinduism, a havan or yagya is mandatory during any auspicious event, and without them, the ceremony is considered incomplete. With every offering, we pronounce the word "Swaha." But have you ever wondered why it's necessary to say this word at the end of every mantra? Let's explore the religious and mythological reasons behind it.

The true meaning of 'Swaha'

The word "Swaha" is a combination of two syllables, meaning "to deliver in the right manner. " Saying "Swaha" while offering materials into the havan kund signifies that we are dedicating the materials to their destination, the respective deity, with complete devotion and the correct method.

What is the mythological belief?

According to religious texts, "Swaha" is not just a word, but a goddess, known as the wife of the god Agni. Swaha is also the daughter of King Daksha Prajapati. The Puranas describe that the gods did not have the power to consume food directly.

It was then established that offerings to the gods would be made through fire, but only if the name of Agni Deva's wife, "Swaha," was invoked. Therefore, without the chanting of "Swaha," Agni Deva was unable to deliver the offerings to the gods.

Importance of Swaha in Havan

A havan performed without the pronunciation of "Swaha" is considered incomplete and fruitless. Havishya, the havan material, is the food of the gods. The gods and goddesses can only consume this material when offered to the fire with the pronunciation of "Swaha." Therefore, if the havan is performed with the pronunciation of "Swaha" during the havan, the offering reaches the gods, fulfilling the purpose of the yagna.

Rig Veda and the medium of Agni Dev

In the Puranas and the Rig Veda, Agni Deva is considered an "angel" or a "bridge" between man and God. Therefore, when we offer any material to the fire, it transforms into divine energy and reaches the forces of the universe. "Swaha" (the sacred fire) is the medium that directs that energy. Therefore, the next time you participate in a havan (fire sacrifice), don't just consider the word "Swaha" a mere ritual, but understand its meaning while offering the havan.
