Order to release a five-year-old child

Former US Vice President Kamala Harris also raised the issue of the arrest of the five-year-old boy, who was detained by immigration officials in the city of Minneapolis.

"This case stems from the government's ill-conceived and poorly implemented attempt to meet its daily deportation quota, even at the cost of trauma to children," U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said in his order on Saturday, January 31.

The father and son, who were from Ecuador and were legally living in the US as refugees, were sent to a family detention center in Dilley, Texas, their lawyer, Mark Prokosh, told Reuters after their arrest.

McLaughlin clarified

Following Kamala Harris' post on social media platform X, US Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, 'The IEC did not use the child as a pawn.'

McLaughlin continued, "The IEC operation on January 20th was aimed at arresting the child's father. The father abandoned the child, and the IEC repeatedly asked the child's mother to take custody of him, but she refused.
