News Topical, Digital Desk : A group of US citizens, non-profit immigration organizations and legal organizations filed a lawsuit on Monday against the State Department and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The petition asks the court to stay the visa ban against 75 countries, arguing that the visa ban attempts to dismantle decades-old immigration laws.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New York City, is the first major attempt to block the State Department's policy, announced and implemented last month, that suspends visa approvals for people from 75 countries, more than 85 percent of which are non-European and have large Black populations.

In an internet media post last month, the State Department described the policy as necessary to prevent the migration of people who receive welfare benefits at the expense of the American people. These immigrants often become dependent on the government for their livelihoods.

The lawsuit, filed by the National Immigration Law Center and five other legal organizations, calls the State Department's claim baseless and false, arguing that most immigrant visa applicants are not eligible for cash welfare programs for years.
