This is how Tulsi originated
According to legend, in ancient times, there was a young woman named Vrinda, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. She belonged to the demon clan. She was married to a demon named Jalandhar. After this, she lived as a housewife and worshipped Lord Vishnu daily. During this time, a war broke out between the demons and the gods. Jalandhar sided with the demons. During the war, Vrinda said, "You are going to war, and I am going to perform a puja. I will pray to Lord Vishnu for your safety."
After this, Vrinda started doing penance for Lord Vishnu. The gods could not defeat Jalandhar in the battle. After this, Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world, took the form of Jalandhar and approached Vrinda. Vrinda touched Jalandhar's feet on seeing him. This broke Vrinda's chastity. At the same time, the gods defeated Jalandhar in the battle and killed him. After this, Vrinda came to know that she had been deceived. She got angry and cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into stone. After this, Vishnu ji turned into Shaligram stone.
This caused an uproar in all three worlds. At the request of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, Vrinda revoked her curse. Freeing the Lord from the curse, she herself committed sati with her husband Jalandhar. This is when a plant was created, which came to be known as Tulsi. Lord Vishnu granted the boon that Shaligram would always be with her. She would certainly be worshipped along with him.
