News Topical, Digital Desk : It's true that memory loss and body tremors were once considered normal as we aged. But it's also true that in today's fast-paced lives, diseases like dementia and Parkinson's are making premature appearances.
Both of these diseases affect our brain's ability to function. Doctors believe that, in addition to genetics, our lifestyle also plays a major role in contributing to these diseases. Therefore, if you want to keep your brain healthy into old age, AIIMS neurologist Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat suggests that it's important to break three habits today. Let's find out what these three habits are.
Sleeping less than 7-8 hours
Sleep is essential not only for physical exhaustion but also for mental cleansing. When we sleep, our brain eliminates toxins through the glymphatic system. These include amyloid-beta protein, which is directly linked to Alzheimer's and dementia.
Therefore, people who regularly sleep less than 6 hours a day develop a buildup of harmful proteins in their brains, which destroy brain cells. To ensure a full night's sleep, make it a habit to go to bed at the same time every night and stop using your mobile phone 1-2 hours before bed.
skipping breakfast
Breakfast acts as fuel for our brain. After fasting overnight, the brain needs glucose to function properly. Therefore, people who skip breakfast become deficient in nutrients, which increases the risk of brain atrophy, or brain shrinkage. This can be the beginning of dementia .
Therefore, it's important to include omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, and fresh fruit in your breakfast. These help repair brain cells.
not exercising
Lethargy in the body causes lethargy in the mind. Exercise increases blood circulation in the body, which provides the brain with ample oxygen and nutrients. However, lack of exercise increases the risk of obesity and high blood pressure, two major risk factors for Parkinson's and dementia. Not being physically active can cause dopamine levels in the brain to drop, which is a major cause of Parkinson's. Therefore, do at least 30 minutes of brisk walking, yoga, or any other exercise every day.
