News Topical, Digital Desk : Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" received 16 nominations for the 98th Academy Awards on Thursday, tying the record for the most nominations in Oscar history. Voters at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences gave "Sinners" the most nominations ever, breaking the record of 14 nominations held by "All About Eve," "Titanic," and "La La Land."

In addition to Best Picture, Coogler was also nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and Michael B. Jordan, who played a dual role, received his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

Paul Thomas Anderson's revolutionary father-daughter saga "One Battle After Another," which was considered the favorite before nominations, came in second with 13 nominations. Four of its actors, Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn, were nominated. However, newcomer Chas Infiniti missed out on the Best Actress nomination.

Ten films were nominated for Best Picture, with their names read by presenters Daniel Brooks and Lewis Pullman. These included Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Values, Sinners, and Train Dreams.

Homebound out of Oscar race
Filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan's film Homebound has been eliminated from the Oscars 2026 race after failing to secure a nomination in the Best International Feature Film category. India's entry was included in the Academy's list of 15 shortlisted entries but it did not make it to the final five.

Meanwhile, Indian-American filmmaker Geeta Gandhabir received two Oscar nominations on Thursday: Best Documentary Short Film for "The Devil Is Busy" and Best Documentary Feature for "The Perfect Neighbor."
