This is how the Shivalinga originated.

The origin of the Shivalinga (Shivling Katha in Hindi) is described in the ninth chapter of Volume 1 of the Shiva Purana. According to legend, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma once had a duel over who was more powerful. When news of this spread, all the gods and sages asked Vishnu and Brahma to go to Lord Shiva. All the gods then approached Shiva.

Mahadev was already aware of the ongoing conflict between Lord Vishnu and Brahma. Mahadev told the gods that whoever reaches the end of the flame created by him first will be declared more powerful. Lord Vishnu and Brahma agreed with Mahadev's words. At that very moment, a flame emerged from Lord Shiva's radiant body. This flame was moving towards the underworld and the sky, but at that very moment, Lord Vishnu and Brahma were unable to reach the flame. After this, Lord Vishnu apologized to Mahadev for not being able to reach the flame.

Then Mahadev asked Brahma if he could reach the end of the flame, but in order to gain the title of superiority, he lied. He said that the flame's end point was in the netherworld. Shiva then replied, "O Lord Brahma, you are lying." Mahadev then declared Vishnu superior. This flame was then worshipped as a Shivalinga .
