News Topical, Digital Desk : World Rabies Day is celebrated every year on September 28th. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the deadly disease rabies and to explain ways to prevent it. Rabies is a virus that damages the brain and nervous system of humans and animals. If not treated promptly, it can lead to death. Most people think that rabies is spread only by dog bites, but new research and medical advice suggests that many other animals can also spread the disease.

What is rabies and why is it so dangerous?

Rabies is a viral disease caused by Lyssavirus. This virus is mostly transmitted to humans through the saliva of infected animals. The virus attacks the nervous system and causes inflammation of the brain, which can lead to coma or death. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 59,000 people die from rabies worldwide each year, with most cases occurring in Asia and Africa.

How is the situation in India?

Over 95% of rabies cases in India are caused by dog bites, but it's not limited to dogs. Dr. Mukund Singh, Internal Medical Consultant at Accord Superspeciality Hospital in Faridabad, explains that rabies is a disease with no permanent cure. Once symptoms develop, saving the patient is nearly impossible. Therefore, timely vaccination and proper treatment are crucial.

Which animals spread rabies?

  • Dogs: Dogs, especially stray dogs, are the most common carriers of rabies. Dog bites account for 99% of rabies cases in India.
  • Cats: Pet or stray cats can also spread rabies if they are not vaccinated.
  • Bats: Bat bites pose a high risk of rabies because they often go undetected. Bats are the main source of rabies in the United States.
  • Monkeys: Rabies can also be transmitted through bites or scratches from monkeys, especially in areas where monkeys are abundant.
  • Foxes, raccoons and jackals: These wild animals can also be carriers of rabies.
  • Cows, buffalo, and other farm animals: If these animals are infected with rabies, their bites can also spread the disease.
