News Topical, Digital Desk : CPR India's ongoing research on potatoes is now complete. This is making it easier to sow potatoes from seeds instead of tubers. Controlling the potato DNA—chromosomes—in seeds will be easier. This will improve potato quality.

At the same time, due to the change in the gene, the consumption of potato improves glucoindex, due to which patients of diabetes and other diseases will be able to use it comfortably. At the same time, the quality of potato can be improved. After that, carbohydrate, solanine and chaconine can be reduced in potato. Due to which the effects of many types of diseases and consumption of potato can be reduced. CPR India has completed its research. From next year, seeds of new varieties of potato prepared by TPS diploid method will be available. Potato will also be sown from seeds from this. Till now, potato tubers are prepared by tetraploid technology.

Potatoes will now be sown from seeds, not tubers.

Potatoes are a crop grown in all regions of the country and the world. Almost everyone uses them in various ways. Potatoes are still cultivated using traditional methods. A new crop is cultivated by burying the tuber in the soil. This tuber is prepared using the tetraloid method. Its genome contains four chromosomes. Therefore, there is a risk that traits from older varieties may be passed on to one or another chromosome. 

The Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), India, recently completed a study to produce potato seeds using diploid rather than allopolyploid, i.e., two sets of chromosomes carrying genes.

Experts are able to control them easily. With this, the traditional properties of potatoes have been changed. With this, the glucoindex of potatoes has been improved. Due to which the speed of release of glucose can be reduced. At the same time, the level of carbohydrates can also be reduced. With this, potatoes can be used normally by patients of diabetes and obesity. At the same time, solanine and chaconine in the DNA of potatoes can be controlled. This will reduce the problems of nausea, dizziness, flatulence and vomiting. In this way, it will help in preparing potatoes as a low calorie food item. With this, patients of blood sugar and blood pressure will be able to use them comfortably. People with gout or increased uric acid have problems with potatoes.

Dr. Arvind Yadav, Principal Scientist at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, stated that potatoes will now be sown using "true potato seeds" (TPS) instead of tubers. This marks a major change in the potato production process. Potato seeds, or TPS, are small seeds obtained from the pods produced after potato plants flower. These are different from normal tuber seeds. This will also help control crop diseases.

Dr. Neeraj Sharma (India Head, Central Potato Research Institute, India) said, "We have completed our potato research. Next year, potato seeds will be sown instead of tubers. These will be provided to each state for trials. After that, allocations to farmers will begin. The seeds are expected to improve potato quality. Several elements, including carbohydrates, have been controlled. This will reduce the risk of potato disease, and even those with illnesses will not be afraid to consume potatoes."
