News Topical, Digital Desk : Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado said her country is now on the verge of a true democracy. She claimed that with the support of the United States and President Donald Trump, Venezuela will soon be free.
Machado said Venezuela has now taken its initial but important steps toward democracy. He said this change will impact not just Venezuela but the entire region and the world. He added that the American people and Trump will play a major role in Venezuela's independence.
Allegations of election rigging
Machado's party claims that Nicolas Maduro stole the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election. The United States and several other countries have supported these allegations. Machado has been campaigning for years to oust Maduro's leftist government.
However, US President Trump has bypassed Machado and endorsed Delcy Rodriguez. Trump says Machado lacks sufficient support within the country. He has expressed support for Rodriguez as interim leader as long as the US continues to have access to Venezuela's oil resources.
CIA chief visits Caracas
Machado said that Delcy Rodriguez is not making her own decisions, but rather following orders. His statement came after CIA chief John Ratcliffe met with Rodriguez in Caracas. According to US officials, the US sent a message of improved relations during this meeting.
In a sign of improved relations, a deportation flight carrying 231 Venezuelans from the US arrived in Caracas. This was the first such flight since Maduro's ouster. Trump is taking a tougher crackdown on illegal immigration in his second term.
Nobel Medal presented to Trump
Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump on Thursday. She said the medal was presented to Trump on behalf of the Venezuelan people. However, according to Nobel Committee rules, the prize cannot be transferred.
Meanwhile, Trump and Rodriguez spoke by phone for the first time on Wednesday. The White House said Trump was appreciative of Rodriguez's approach. However, Rodriguez stated that his government would engage strongly with the US diplomatically.
