News Topical, Digital Desk : Nitish Kumar's party, the JDU, has revealed its stance on the UGC Bill 2026. Party spokesperson and MLA Neeraj Kumar stated that Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar drafted the Constitution for this country. The Constitution guarantees everyone the right to express their views. In such a situation, any feelings of neglect or resentment among any segment of society are not good for democracy. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is a role model for justice, development, and respect for all. Various comments are being made regarding the new UGC regulations. Now, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court regarding this matter. Everyone respects the judiciary, so the judiciary's decision will be crucial for everyone.

Why are the new UGC guidelines being opposed?

  • The UGC Equity Regulations 2026 came into effect this month.
  • OBC category included in the definition of caste discrimination
  • Removal of provisions such as fines or suspension for false or malicious complaints
  • According to the general category, the law can be misused to target them.
  • It is claimed that those filing false complaints will not face any penalty.

Petition filed in Supreme Court

The new UGC guidelines have raised the political temperature in Uttar Pradesh. Several BJP officials have even resigned over the issue. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court alleging that an inclusive definition of caste-based discrimination has been adopted and that certain categories have been excluded from institutional protections.

Request for a stay from the court

The Supreme Court has been requested to stop the implementation of the Act in its current form and to redefine caste-based discrimination in a manner that is "caste-neutral and constitutionally consistent." It states, "Discrimination on the basis of caste should be defined in a manner that provides protection to all persons who are victims of discrimination on the basis of caste, regardless of their caste identity." The petition seeks interim directions to the Central Government and the UGC to ensure that the "Equal Opportunity Centres" and "Equality Helplines" created under these regulations are made available without any discrimination.
