In fact, Anna Sebastian Perayil, a young chartered accountant (CA) from Kerala, joined the giant company Ernst & Young (EY) four months ago in March and since then she used to mention the stress of work at her home. Now Perayil's mother Anita Augustine has written an email to EY India President Rajiv Memani.
Always been on top...worked very hard
The mother said that Perayil passed her CA exam in 2023 and joined EY Pune as an employee in March 2024. She always topped in college too.
She said this was her first job and so she worked tirelessly to meet the company’s expectations, but the effort took a toll on her physical, mental and emotional health.
Work was so stressful that I lost my sleep
Anita Augustine further said that soon after joining she started experiencing anxiety, insomnia and stress, but she persisted and kept working hard and with determination. In the letter, she slammed the firm for overworking her.
The boss had warned me
The victim's mother also claimed that many employees had resigned due to excessive workload, so her daughter's boss told her not to do so and that everyone in the team should change their opinion.
Anna's manager often rescheduled meetings during cricket matches and assigned him work at the end of the day, increasing his stress.
The manager was ruthless, he didn't even give me a chance to breathe
She also said that her daughter worked late into the night and even on weekends. "Anna told us that she had a lot of workload, especially because of verbal assignments beyond official work," the mother said.
The mother said she had asked the daughter not to work, but the manager was ruthless. She was made to work late into the night, even on weekends, without giving her a chance to even breathe.
Work was given even at night
Augustine also mentioned an incident where her daughter's boss gave her a task to complete at night with a deadline the next morning. This left her with no time to rest or eat properly. When she confronted the manager about this, she was told, "You can work at night; that's what we all do."
This is a wake-up call for the company
The grieving mother said in her email that her daughter's death was a "wake-up call" for the company. "It's time to reflect on the work culture within your company and take meaningful steps to prioritize the health and well-being of your employees," the letter read.
was admitted to the hospital
Though the exact cause of Anna's death is not clear, the email highlights that a few weeks before her death, she complained of chest tightness and was rushed to a hospital in Pune. The victim's mother said that the cardiologist said that the daughter was not getting enough sleep and was eating very late. Following this, the 26-year-old girl died on July 20.
There was no immediate response from the company. The exact circumstances of the woman's death were not clear from the email.
