New Delhi. The Modi government has changed the name of Port Blair, the capital of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar, to 'Shri Vijayapuram' after 234 years. Giving this information, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the name 'Shri Vijayapuram' reflects our struggle for independence and the contribution of Andaman and Nicobar in it.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a post on the internet media platform X on Friday that inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolve to free the country from all symbols of slavery, the Home Ministry has decided to rename Port Blair as 'Shri Vijayapuram'. This Indian island has a unique place in the independence and history of our country.
Amit Shah called it a symbol of struggle
The Home Minister said that this island, which played the role of a naval base in the Chola Empire, is today ready to accelerate the security and development of the country. This island is also the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose first hoisted the tricolor and Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters fought for the freedom of Mother India in the Cellular Jail.
In 1789, Lt. Archibald Blair came to Indian Island
After the British took over this Indian island, the East India Company sent Lt. Archibald Blair to survey the Andaman Sea in 1788 AD. He arrived on this island in 1789 and started living here with his entourage. He then named this island after the then Governor General Lord Cornwallis, but later this port island was named 'Port Blair' after Blair.
