To establish their dominance over heaven, Shumbh and Nishumbh attacked Devaloka. The gods of heaven could not stand before the power of Shumbh and Nishumbh. At that time, Shumbh and Nishumbh ousted Indra and established their dominance over Devaloka. At that time, all the gods went to Brahma and Vishnu and narrated their experiences to them.

Lord Vishnu then advised the gods to seek help from Goddess Jagadamba. All the gods sought refuge in Goddess Jagadamba and began worshipping her. Then, due to Goddess Kaushiki's anger, Goddess Chamunda incarnated. Goddess Chamunda instantly killed Chanda and Mund. Goddess Chamunda killed Chanda and Mund during the Sandhi period. For this reason, Goddess Chamunda is worshipped on the day of Sandhi Puja.
