This festival is celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Kartik. Narak Chaturdashi is also known as Chhoti Diwali. On this day, Lord Krishna, Yamaraj, and Hanuman are primarily worshipped. It is believed that on this day, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura and freed 16,000 girls from his captivity.

Light a lamp in these places

The practice of lighting lamps on this day is of great significance. It is said that on the evening of Naraka Chaturdashi, a four-sided lamp should be lit outside the main entrance of the house, facing south. This lamp is dedicated to Yamaraja and is called "Yama Deepam," or "Yamaraj's lamp." Lighting it relieves family members from the fear of untimely death.

On this day, light a lamp near a dustbin or any place where household waste or old, useless items are stored. Doing so removes poverty and negative energy from the home.

If possible, light a lamp under a Peepal or Bilva tree on the night of Naraka Chaturdashi. It is believed that this pleases the ancestors and alleviates financial problems.
